Sides Scores Best Kings Royal Run Since 2014 With 13th -Place Finish
Inside Line Promotions - ROSSBURG, Ohio (July 20, 2021) - The highlight of a hectic week in Ohio was a 13th-place result in a Kings Royal for Jason Sides.
It marked his 10th career Kings Royal A Main appearance and his best outing during the crown jewel event since 2014.
"It was a step forward," he said. "We had gotten up to ninth before a caution came out. I felt our car was better before the caution. It was almost like we were too good too early. On the restart a couple got by us and we struggled to get going again. We spun our tires and didn't get going as well. There was a gaggle of cars around us. I had been hoping for a caution to gather us up, but after that I wished we hadn't had a caution."
Sides opened the busy World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series week by almost overcoming a slow qualifying lap last Tuesday during the Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic at Attica Raceway Park in Attica. He charged from 12th to seventh in a heat race and from eighth to fifth place in the Last Chance Showdown, which was only one position out of transferring into the main event.
"We were late in qualifying and the top got so far around," he said. "I thought we'd try something and run the bottom and across the track. There wasn't much at all there. I slid and really it put ourselves in a position where we were starting in the back. To get back going and make the progress was good, but to be one spot out of making the feature, you hate that."
Sides parked his car early during the opening night at Eldora Speedway on Wednesday followed by two rainy nights, which sidelined Sides until Saturday when the half-mile track featured a pair of $175,000-to-win Kings Royal races.
Sides transferred from the C Main and advanced from 22nd to 16 th in the B Main during the afternoon show before a charge from sixth to third place in a heat race locked him into the evening's Kings Royal A Main. He maneuvered from 18th into the top 10 before settling for a 13th-place result.
"The track had some moisture in it and the top and the bottom were kind of equal," he said. "You could run in really hard on the bottom and it'd stick you coming off. We made some wholesale type changes on the car and it seemed to work. That caution probably cost us a top 10, but we were glad to make the show and move forward."
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday, but a lack of grip on the tricky track ended with Sides finishing 10th in the Last Chance Showdown.
Next up is a trip to Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., on Tuesday for the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup followed by a visit to Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., for the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals on Friday and Saturday.

Sides Produces Top-10 Run at Badger 40 to Build Momentum Entering Busy Week
Inside Line Promotions - NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (July 12, 2021) - Jason Sides has found a renewed sense of confidence entering a busy week in Ohio.
Sides scored his third top 10 in the last five World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series races last Saturday during the Badger 40 at Wilmot Raceway.
The night began with Sides qualifying second quickest before a runner-up result in a heat race advanced him into the dash.
"We had a good lap in qualifying," he said. "When I got out of the car I thought it probably wouldn't last. It did until the last car came out when (Brad) Sweet beat us. It still got us on the front row of the heat race.
"It was slimy down low and I spun the tires on the start of the heat. (Scotty) Theil got away from me. I didn't want to press it since we were still in the dash running second so I just maintained."
A sixth-place finish in the dash garnered the sixth starting position in the main event.
"We were a little tight early," he said. "About halfway through we were decent and then got a little free toward the end. We hung on for 10 th. You always think you could have made it better after the race. Where I was running around the bottom it got real thin. The top was so far around I committed myself to the bottom."
The 10th-place result was Sides' fourth top 10 of the season.
Next up is five straight nights of racing in The Buckeye State with action on Tuesday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica for the Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic and Wednesday through Saturday at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg for a pair of Kings Royal spectacles.
"I feel pretty damn good," he said. "We've been having some good runs and consistency. The motors are running well. I'm looking forward to the Ohio speedweek we have. I think you race it night by night and don't think about the money on the line. If you have a bad night there's always the next night. We're not trying to look ahead. We're just looking to the Brad Doty Classic and then we'll go from there."

"It's an exciting relationship," Sides said. "They are from Memphis and we're from Memphis. A lot of good bands and a lot of good racers come from Memphis. I used to race dirt bikes with guys that were on their setup crew years ago. I've been to several concerts and listened to their music for 20-plus years. Sides Posts First Top Five With World of Outlaws Since 2017 After Charge at Cedar Lake
Inside Line Promotions - NEW RICHMOND, Wis. (July 5, 2021) - Jason Sides got stronger each night during the Independence Day Spectacular at Cedar Lake Speedway, where he captured his first top-five finish since 2019.
The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series doubleheader was fruitful for Sides, who qualified sixth quickest and placed fourth in a heat race before rallying from 12th to fifth in the A Main.
"We were tight both nights in the beginning of the race," he said. "As the track slowed down we maintained our speed. When people started slowing down we worked our way through the field. There was rubber up top and everybody's tires were worn out. I never got off the bottom and on a late restart we knew they were going to stay in the rubber. By that time the car had freed up where I could rip around the bottom."
It was Sides' first top five with the World of Outlaws since July 8, 2017.
"It's like a win for us," he said. "The last couple of years we've struggled here and there. Top 10s are big achievements. A top five is like a win for us. I hope there's a few more.
"I've got Scotty Males with me. He worked for me in 2004 and half of 2005 and helped off and on throughout the years. We're working well together."
Saturday showcased another charge at the end of the night. After qualifying 17th quickest and finishing where he started - sixth - in a heat race, Sides maneuvered from 17th to 11th in the A Main.
"Early in the night the track was a lot better," he said. "It didn't dry out as quick as the second night. That hampered us a little bit. It did start slowing down, but not quite as much. There were a lot more people on the bottom the second night and the top didn't go away as quick. We got to 10th at one point on the back straightaway, but Spencer Bayston got back by me and then Jacob Allen in the last lap or two."
Next up is a trip to Wilmot Raceway in Wilmot, Wis., for the Badger 40 this Saturday. Sides finished 10th at the track last year.
"Wilmot is a fun little track," he said. "It's kind of flat and more beneficial to us than it would be the stomp and steers because there's not much of a top. I've always liked it."

Sides Returns to Busy Schedule After Being Out of World of Outlaws Action for Seven Weeks
Inside Line Promotions - JACKSON, Minn. (June 28, 2021) - Jason Sides missed nearly seven weeks of action from the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series trail after his racing trailer was damaged during a freeway accident.
Sides and his team repaired the trailer at their shop in Tennessee before rejoining 'The Greatest Show on Dirt' during one of the busiest stretches of the season.
Sides returned on June 17 and competed in seven races during the last 11 days.
"It took me a bit to get back going," he said. "Being off for a couple of months, it felt like Volusia starting the season back over again."
Sides' best run during the recent stretch was a season-best seventh-place showing on Friday night during the second preliminary night of the AGCO Jackson Nationals hosted by Jackson Motorplex.
"I banged the wall going down the front straightaway, which really screwed me up into turn one and I jumped the cushion," he said. "A couple of cars got by me and we fell to ninth. Toward the end I got back going. I slowed down a few laps after getting into the wall trying to figure out if anything was hurt on the car. Once I felt everything was okay we gained a couple of positions back to finish seventh."
The top 10 combined with a 20th-place result during Thursday's event opener put Sides in a good position entering Saturday's finale. The event was postponed one day because of wet weather and Sides finished where he started in both a qualifier - third - and the main event - 13 th - on Sunday.
"If I got off the bottom I got tight from the middle of the track to the cushion," he said. "We got a few spots and lost a few spots."
Next up is the Independence Day Spectacular this Friday and Saturday at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis.

Sides Patiently Waiting to Return to Racing Following Highway Crash
Inside Line Promotions - BARTLETT, Tenn. (May 17, 2021) - Jason Sides remains sidelined following an unfortunate incident last week.
The veteran World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series driver was rear ended at a high rate of speed while traveling to Pennsylvania. The impact that occurred on a freeway in Ohio shoved the back door of his trailer into his sprint car. The team missed last week's races in Pennsylvania and will likely be out of action this week.
"We're still in limbo, waiting on insurance," Sides said. "We had a trailer lined up to be able to race this weekend, but it was sold so that fell through."
Sides said his team returned to the shop in Tennessee and used a forklift to remove the rear door of the trailer. He had to build a custom ramp to exit the race car and mule from inside the trailer as the back door works as a ramp.
"When we got hit the door pushed the rear bumper into the tail tank, but the race car is mostly okay," he said. "A couple of cabinet doors fell off inside the trailer. Most of the damage is to the rear of the trailer. Right now we're dealing with insurance and hopefully we can get back to racing very soon. Fortunately, we are all okay so that's the most important thing."
Sides said it will be a week-to-week decision on when he is able to put together an opportunity to resume racing.

Sides Looking Forward to Eldora Speedway Doubleheader This Weekend
Inside Line Promotions - ODESSA, Mo. (May 4, 2021) - Jason Sides is heading to a familiar high-banked oval this weekend when Eldora Speedway hosts the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series.
The track near Rossburg, Ohio, features the #LetsRaceTwo event on Friday and Saturday, marking the first World of Outlaws races there since September 2019.
"We didn't get to race there last year because of the pandemic," Sides said. "When you get back to somewhere you're familiar with you know what to expect. You know how to set the car up and what to do. It makes things a little more simple. A nice goal would be top 10 both nights this weekend."
Sides highlighted the first World of Outlaws tripleheader of the season last weekend with a 15th-place result at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill., on Thursday. He qualified 20th quickest and advanced from seventh to sixth place in a heat race before gaining a pair of positions in the A Main.
"Everything happens so fast there," he said. "We made it through the heat race even though I hit the wall a few times trying to get by a guy on the outside. In the feature I made a decision to not get tore up. There were some holes in the track. If you ran the top it'd pitch the front end around and potentially put you in the wall. I stayed down low and made whatever progress I could on the bottom."
Sides then ventured to I-70 Motorsports Park for the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown, which began on Friday. He qualified 12th quickest, placed fifth in a heat race and ended 18th in the main event.
"The track was fast," he said. "It was their first race and really the first time they got on the track with water trucks. They got it a little bit wet the first night so it was narrow. It's so fast that it was hard to pass. I think it was a little easier for the guys ripping around the top to get by than some on the bottom.
"The track had a few rocks in it. One hit the left front brake line and all the fluid leaked out so I didn't have much brakes. They started fading toward the end because there wasn't any fluid in it. We probably use brakes more than people think on the big, fast tracks. You run it wide open, but instead of lifting to turn in you use your brakes to do that. When you go to the floor on the brake pedal it pushes up and then you have to lift and end up pushing out of the lane, too."
Mechanical woes ended the night early on Saturday as Sides was running in a transfer position in the Last Chance Showdown.

Sides Eyeing Return to Jacksonville Speedway Before Debut at I-70 Speedway
Inside Line Promotions - BRISTOL, Tenn. (April 27, 2021) - Jason Sides has a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series tripleheader on tap this weekend.
Sides will venture to Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Ill., on Thursday before making his debut at I-70 Speedway in Odessa, Mo., on Friday and Saturday during the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown.
Sides has made three trips to Jacksonville Speedway in his career with a top result of eighth during his debut in 2014.
"It's really small," he said. "It's like going from one of the biggest tracks in Bristol to one of the smallest in a week."
This weekend's action at I-70 Speedway is the first World of Outlaws event at the oval since 1986.
"I've driven by there a bunch when I stayed at (Danny) Lasoski's shop," he said. "It's been closed since I went by there. He told us it used to be a dirt track and high banked and they changed it to asphalt. Looking at the video the other day of (Brian) Brown there it looks like a decent size."
Sides competed last weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway, which welcomes the World of Outlaws for the first time since June 2001 for the World of Outlaws Bristol Throwdown. Sides' best result was a 23rd-place finish on Sunday when he exited the feature early following a Last Chance Showdown victory.
"I wasn't very comfortable Thursday during the practice day," he said. "We went out four times. The very first one I had a death grip on the steering wheel. The second one wasn't as bad. The third one got a little better. The fourth one I felt decent, but I still didn't feel like when you roll into Knoxville or Eldora.
"The first race night when I hot lapped it wasn't near as bad. We didn't qualify as well as you need to and then you're marred in the back of a heat race and the back of the B Main. The second night we didn't qualify great, but it put us on the pole of the fourth heat race is what I call it. From that point the clean air versus dirty air was so intense. When I was out front I felt way better than I did in the back of a heat race. We made an executive decision for the feature so I rode around a couple of laps and then pulled in. I know my limitations."

Sides Returning to Bristol Motor Speedway This Weekend for First Time Since 2001
Inside Line Promotions - BARTLETT, Tenn. (April 19, 2021) - Jason Sides is one of only five drivers heading into the World of Outlaws Bristol Throwdown this weekend with sprint car experience at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Sides competed in June 2001 during the most recent World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series doubleheader at the famed pavement oval that has been covered with dirt.
"It wasn't real easy," he said. "We crashed the first night. I didn't get hurt or anything. Someone blew a power steering line and was up against the outside guardrail down a straightaway. We were right behind him. We hit and then someone ran over us from behind. It tore the car up pretty bad and I remember we worked on it in a parking lot."
Sides is hoping to have a less-eventful weekend this Friday and Saturday when the track in Bristol, Tenn., welcomes the World of Outlaws for the first time in nearly 20 years.
"My goal is to hopefully make both shows and not tear anything up or hurt any motors," he said. "We've taken some measures and changed a few of the rod ends and radius rods to make it a little stronger. I did have a wing built for that place that's a little stronger with thicker material.
"The track is so fast and kind of narrow. When something happens in front of you there's no place to go and you can't get slowed down. Watching some of the late models and modifieds, it's like the brakes aren't sufficient because they have to pitch it sideways and they end in a big pile of cars. It all happens so quickly."
Sides is coming off a dormant weekend as World of Outlaws races at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla., and at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, were postponed because of the weather.

Sides Records Heat Race Win and 14th-Place Feature Finish at Kokomo Speedway
Inside Line Promotions - HAUBSTADT, Ind. (April 12, 2021) - Jason Sides earned his second heat race win of the season and his sixth top-15 feature result of the year last Friday at Kokomo Speedway.
Sides kicked off the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series weekend in Indiana with a second-place qualifying effort at the dirt oval.
"It all started off pretty good," he said. "We had a good pill draw and that got us a good qualifying lap. The heat race win got us into the dash. Then we got another good pill draw with the No. 1. It didn't last too long, but we were in the dash. I fought back for a couple of laps, but I was trying too hard and let (James) McFadden get by so we ran third."
Sides' heat race win was followed by a third-place finish in the dash, giving him the third starting position in the 40-lap main event.
"We tightened up just a little bit because the track was starting to slick off," he said. "When we rolled out they pushed the infield tires in. It was really wet on the bottom. Our car was too tight where I'd normally be running. Then on a couple of restarts we were hung on the outside and lost a few spots. On one restart the car in front of me jumped another car and three or four of us got bottled up."
Sides was on the short end of two restarts that cost him a handful of positions each time, relegating him to a 14th-place result.
The weekend concluded on Saturday at Tri-State Speedway, where Sides timed in 12th quickest in his group. He then advanced from sixth to fifth in a heat race and from 20th to 17th in the A Main.
"We went out toward the end of qualifying," he said. "Going 12th quick in our group started us sixth in the heat race. Donny (Schatz) got a little loose in one of the corners. I got it held down and got by him. We made sure we made the feature. That's not the best track for me, the smaller ones like that. They used to be great, but not anymore. To get through that night and not tear anything up, I hate to say it like that, we were happy to get out of there making some progress and in one piece."
Up next for Sides will be World of Outlaws races on Friday at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla., and Saturday at Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, for the Texas Outlaw Nationals.
"I look forward to going to both of those places," he said. "We had a decent run at Lawton last year. We were a bit too tight. Hopefully we can learn from there last year. And I've always enjoyed racing at Devil's Bowl and we seem to run well there."

Sides Scores First Top 10 of Season During Weekend Finale in Pevely
Inside Line Promotions - PEVELY, Mo. (April 5, 2021) - Jason Sides earned his first top 10 of the season last Saturday at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.
"Only about 80 more to go to make for a good season," he joked.
Sides invaded a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series doubleheader at the high-banked oval, where he ran into misfortune during Friday's opener. Sides qualified 16th quickest and was riding in a feature lock-in position during a heat race when mechanical woes resulted in a DNF.
"The heat race was going pretty well and we hurt a motor so we had to change motors and regroup for the Last Chance Showdown," he said. "We got through there and started at the tail end of the feature. We weren't great, but the attrition worked in our favor."
Sides, who placed sixth in the Last Chance Showdown to transfer into the final starting position in the main event, maneuvered from 24th to 16th in the A Main.
Saturday's weekend finale played out much better. Sides qualified fourth quickest and he finished second in a heat race to make the dash.
"The next night we qualified better and the whole night was a lot better," he said. "We had a little better pill draw and we were better, too. Qualifying well like that gets you on the front row of your heat race and then if you can maintain you make the dash, which sets you up for success."
Sides placed sixth in the dash to line up on the outside of the third row for the main event.
"Right on the start it didn't go real well," he said. "Someone chopped down in front and I got tight. Two or three went by so I lost five or six spots on the very first corner. Then we got into a rhythm."
Sides dropped to 13th early in the race before rebounding to score the 10th-place result.
"I was 11th on a caution with 15 laps to go and we got Donny (Schatz) on the restart," he said. "We ran 10th the rest of the race."
Races this weekend will be on Friday at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Ind., and Saturday at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.

Sides Focuses on Positive Following Elbows-Up Type of Night at Jason Johnson Classic
Inside Line Promotions - ELDON, Mo. (March 29, 2021) - Jason Sides deems last Saturday's outing at the Jason Johnson Classic a success.
Although Sides finished 19th in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series main event at Lake Ozark Speedway, he passed the fourth-most cars in the A Main and most importantly was able to roll the car into the trailer at the end of the night.
"That was just about getting through there because it was a motocross track and I forgot my dirt bike," he quipped.
Sides was conservative throughout the night in which he qualified 19 th quickest, placed ninth in a heat race and advanced from seventh to fifth in the Last Chance Showdown to transfer into the back of the main event. Sides tried to stay out of the way and out of the ruts during the A Main, which was shortened from 41 laps to 30 laps because of the track conditions.
"I'm not a spring chicken so I wasn't getting up in it," he said. "We thought about just making a couple of laps and pulling in, but then we figured some cars would crash. We added about 10 more gallons of fuel and just stayed on the bottom to get what we could."
It capped a weekend that began with a rain out on Friday at U.S. 36 Raceway near Osborn, Mo.
Up next is a two-day show at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo., this Friday and Saturday. Sides captured a World of Outlaws win at the track in 2012.
"It's always good being able to run twice at the same track," he said. "We've had some really good runs there and have won so that makes you look forward to returning."

Sides Looking to Put Pieces Together as World of Outlaws Head to Midwest
Inside Line Promotions - PAIGE, Texas (March 22, 2021) - Jason Sides showcased moments of strength last weekend during the Drydene Texas Two-Step Presented by American Lube Supply.
Sides was in contention for a top 10 during World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series action at Cotton Bowl Speedway before a similar problem plagued him in the second half of the feature on Friday.
Sides had qualified 18th quickest before he hustled from sixth to fourth place in a heat race. That lined him up on the inside of the sixth row for the A Main.
"We were pretty decent early, but late in the race it got really slick and we sucked," he said. "The last couple of restarts we lost a few spots. We got a couple back, but at the very end my car got so free. I'm not sure if I got the tires too hot and gooey, but I had no grip the last few laps."
Sides salvaged a 14th-place result, which marked his third straight top-15 showing.
Saturday was on pace to deliver better results as Sides timed in ninth quickest in qualifying. He narrowly lost out on a great battle for fourth place in a heat race, which started him 15th for the feature.
"It was a lot slicker," he said. "The track had a little rubber late in the third heat race off turn four. They watered it a few times trying to help it. We got going and weren't terrible to start the feature. Then we got to spinning the tires. Even when I'd get in the rubber it wasn't good. I stayed down on the bottom too long. I moved up, but it was a little too late. About the time Jacob (Allen) and Brad (Sweet) were racing for the lead they had just passed me. Then Jacob hit the wall the next lap and we were trapped a lap down. We got back by three or four cars, but we were a lap down so it wasn't for position."
Sides ended 18th.
U.S. 36 Raceway near Osborn, Mo., welcomes Sides and the Outlaws on Friday before the Jason Johnson Classic is Saturday at Lake Ozark Speedway in Eldon, Mo. Sides' career-best result at U.S. 36 Raceway was eighth in 2009. He's also enjoyed success at Lake Ozark Speedway, where he established a new track record in 2019.

Sides Makes Progress During World of Outlaws Weekend in the South
Inside Line Promotions - MONROE, La. (March 16, 2021) - Last weekend was a step forward for Jason Sides, who established his season-best result during each night of a World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series doubleheader.
Sides finished 13th on both Friday at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss., and Saturday at The Rev. However, both nights could have yielded a top-10 result.
"Both nights started off good and we had decent speed in the heats," he said. "We were good until the middle of the feature. From that point I seemed to lose a handle on the car. I have to figure out to be tighter at the end of the race. I tried to tighten it with the wing and would get too tight and it flies the front end. I need to be a little tighter in the beginning and maybe sacrifice a little there to where it's good toward the end of the race."
Sides overcame an 18th-place qualifying time by running from fifth to third place in a heat race on Friday at Magnolia Motor Speedway. That started him 10th for the main event. Sides gained a couple of positions early before fading during the second half of the feature.
The following night featured a similar circumstance as Sides timed in ninth quickest and ended third in a heat race to line up on the inside of the fifth row for the feature. Once again he made up ground early in the A Main, but lost a few positions in the final half of the 30-lap race.
"It makes it easier to work from that point when you can have a good start to the night," he said. "We fell back the last two nights in the second half of the feature so we'll focus on trying to tighten up a bit so there isn't as much of a fall off toward the end of the race."
Sides is heading to Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, this Friday and Saturday for the Drydene Texas Two-Step Presented by American Lube Supply. He's raced at the dirt oval twice in his career, posting a career-best 14 th-place finish in 2018 after netting a 16th-place result in 2016.
"I haven't been there since 2018 so being there two days will be helpful," he said. "Whatever you do the first night, if it doesn't work you don't have to wait long to try something else."

Sides Optimistic as Journey to South Fills This Weekend's World of Outlaws Schedule
Inside Line Promotions - TAMPA, Fla. (March 8, 2021) - Jason Sides is heading to Mississippi and Louisiana this weekend.
Sides and the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series are traveling to Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss., on Friday and The Rev in Monroe, La., on Saturday.
"I've won a 360 race in Columbus, but I've never been to Monroe," he said. "It's always exciting returning to a track where you've had success."
Sides captured a USCS Series national event at Magnolia Motor Speedway in 2012.
He returned to World of Outlaws action last weekend following nearly a month off. The action began on Friday at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., where Sides was hampered by a mechanical problem to start the night.
"We were decent for the start of hot laps and then all of a sudden it took a bad shake and blew up," he said. "We pushed to the trailer and got the engine changed to get one lap at the end of qualifying. It wasn't very good."
Sides timed in 20th quickest. He gained a position to finish sixth in a heat race before closing the night with a 20th-place result in the feature.
"It wasn't bad early, but the bottom went away a bit and I should have moved up quicker than I did," he said. "I got freight trained on the top and then at that stage you're a lap down and trying not to mess up anything for drivers racing toward the front."
Saturday started out promising at East Bay Raceway Park, where Sides qualified fifth quickest. He won a heat race to make the dash and placed fifth in the race to line up on the inside of the third row for the A Main. Sides gained a position on the opening lap before he was involved in a crash on Lap 2.
"I thought we had a good shot at a top five," he said. "We were a little loose and someone got into us, which spun us both around. After going to the back we were making progress and coming through there. The track went from the curb to slick back to wet. Below the slick was a sticky wetness. I was trying too hard. I ran in there so hard it started to come around. I stood on it to keep the car in the center of the track and when I did that it hit the wet stuff, flipped and slammed down on all four wheels. That blew the front end out of it."
Sides had climbed just outside the top 15 when the mid-race incident occurred, which relegated him to the pits with a 21st-place result.

Sides Excited for Return to World of Outlaws Competition This Week
Inside Line Promotions - BARTLETT, Tenn. (March 1, 2021) - A pair of dirt ovals in Florida set the stage for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series return to action this weekend.
Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville hosts an event on Friday and East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa is the site of a show on Saturday. Both tracks are familiar ovals for veteran Jason Sides.
"I think it will be different than the DIRTcar Nationals," he said in reference to Volusia Speedway Park. "With it being a one-night show we won't have near the whole spectacle of catering and campers and all that stuff. I think it will be the same, just without the whole atmosphere. I'd say the track will stay a little better all night without all the cars there."
Sides then heads to an oval where he is used to tackling the King of the 360s, which is a 360ci winged sprint car event that follows the DIRTcar Nationals each February. Wetherington Tractor Service, Inc., is a partner for Sides Motorsports and helps East Bay Raceway Park. That is the main reason why Sides is usually granted permission to race the event each year. This year he was denied the opportunity to compete, but he now gets a chance to head to the track this weekend.
"I love that track," he said. "I think a key is being able to read the track. Also, we went and tire tested there in like 2000. In the course of two days I must have done 1,000 laps while we were testing. I just never got out of the car."
The goal for this weekend is to put together two consistent nights.
"With those being single-day races the goal is to get in there, not have any problems and earn a top 10 at Volusia and a top five at East Bay," Sides said.

Sides Improves Feature Finish Throughout DIRTcar Nationals
Inside Line Promotions - BARBERVILLE, Fla. (Feb. 9, 2021) - Jason Sides made progress throughout the three nights he contested at the 50 th annual DIRTcar Nationals last week.
The season-opening event at Volusia Speedway Park began on a high note as Sides qualified fifth quickest to open the Ollie's Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions show last Wednesday. A fourth-place finish in a heat race locked him into a dash and a runner-up result gave him the third starting spot for the main event.
Unfortunately, Sides got hit from behind on the start of the race. He spun and made contact with the inside wall on the frontstretch. Sides attempted to restart the race at the back of the field, but pulled into the infield early with damage.
"The first night out was looking really good," he said. "We had some speed and put ourselves in a pretty good position. The track got a little slick and we probably didn't keep up as much. On the start we got spun by another car and tagged the inside wall. We didn't think anything was wrong and pushed back off, but it didn't feel right. We ended up having a bent front axle."
The team took the next night off to prepare for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series opener on Friday. Sides timed in 16 th quickest in qualifying, but was involved in a wild opening lap crash of his heat race that resulted in a DNF. Another driver ran into Sides' left front wheel on the start. The damaged front end was compounded during a vicious three-car crash in turn one. Sides and his team were able to repair the damage prior to the Last Chance Showdown and a runner-up result earned a spot into the back of the main event.
"We made some progress and got up to 14th, but something happened to our car later in the race and we started pushing up the track," he said. "We lost all the ground we had made up and fell to 20th . I'm not sure if a tire was going low. I couldn't run the bottom anymore and let a few cars get back by."
Saturday's race rained out just after qualifying and the event concluded on Sunday. Sides qualified 10th quickest and placed sixth in a heat race to lock directly into the main event. He battled just outside the top 10 throughout the feature before ending 14th.
"We felt pretty decent there and when the race got going the main racing line was around the top," he said. "After how the event has gone for us the last couple of years I felt lucky to get out of there without anymore crashes."
Two races in the South were planned to fill this weekend for Sides and the World of Outlaws, but weather has forced the cancellation of action on Friday at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Ga., and Saturday at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala.
